Zips Fall to Army in Final Day of Black Knights Invitational

WEST POINT, N.Y.- The Akron volleyball team fell in straight sets, 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-15) to host Army on the final day of the Black Knights Invitational on Saturday afternoon at West Point, N.Y.

Junior Kayla Gwozdz (Temperance, Mich.) was named to the Black Knights Invitational All-Tournament team as she finished the tournament with 32 kills.

Junior Madi Baer (Stow, Ohio) led the Zips' offense with seven kills, followed by Gwozdz, who connected on six. Freshman Emily Weigand (Burton, Ohio) recorded a team-high 23 assists.

Freshman Taylor Sharrits (Concord, Ohio) led the Zips' defense with seven digs, closely followed by Baer who had six.

In the first set, the two teams battled back-and-forth with eight tied scores during the set. Trailing the Black Knights 5-3, Akron used a 4-1 scoring run to regain the lead, 7-6. Army answered back with a 6-1 run of its own, which made the score 17-14 in the Black Knights' favor. Army's offense sparked late in the set going on an 8-3 run to complete the 25-17 victory.

Army's offensive scoring continued as it went ahead in the second set, 3-0. A kill from freshman Alexis Adleta (West Chester, Ohio) and senior Jessica Kloehn (Milwaukee, Wis.) tied the set at seven to put the Zips in position to take the lead, but the Black Knights went on a 4-1 run to go ahead 10-7. Army's offense used a late 5-0 run to secure the 25-12 set win. The Black Knights ended the second set hitting a .458 hitting percentage to the Zips' .160. Gwodz and Baer led the second set for the Zips' offense with three kills respectively.

The Zips' offense continued to battle early in the final set trailing the Black Knights by one, 8-7, but Army utilized a 5-1 scoring run that put it ahead 20-13. A Black Knights' service error got the Zips the ball back and Sharrits scored on a service ace with the Zips trailing Army 21-15. The Black Knights completed the set and match victory, 25-15.

Akron was out-hit .425 to .195 in hitting percentage for the match.

The Zips open up Mid-American Conference play Sept. 22-23 at James A. Rhodes Arena. Akron kicks off the weekend with Kent State in the first meeting of the Crystal Clinic Wagon Wheel Challenge on Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. The match will be broadcasted on ESPN 3. Â The Zips continue their homestand on Saturday, Sept. 23, against Ohio at 5 p.m.
