Akron, Ohio – The Akron Zips men's golf team opens the 2017-18 season in Huntington, W.Va. on Monday and Tuesday, September 11-12, at the Joe Feaganes Invitational hosted by Marshall.
The 54-hole event is scheduled to be played at the Par 71 Guyan Golf & Country Club that stretches 6,573 yards.
"We are excited to get the season going, with the usual nerves that go along with a new season," Zips' head coach David Trainor said. ."We return two starters from last year, and have three newcomers who have jumped into the line up. This is a new event for us. We have prepared well, and look forward to a good start to the season."
Akron's starting five includes two returning starters in senior George Baylis and junior Elliott Grayson. In 2016, Baylis became Akron's first-ever Mid-American Conference champion and followed with a strong 2017 season. Over the last two season's, he averaged a team-low 73.98 stroke average, 73.25 and 74.83, respectively, with nine Top 25 finishes, three Top 5 finishes, and one tournament win (MAC Championship).
In 2017, Grayson emerged as the Zips' scoring leader with a team-best 73.94 stroke average and a two-year average of 74.19 strokes per outing. He posted six Top 25 finishes in 2017, including back-to-back 12th place collegiate-best finishes at the BearCat and Firestone Invitationals.
Following the veteran leaders are redshirt sophomore Euan Gill (Dingwall, Scotland) and newcomers Jacob Morgan (Lafayette, Ga.) and Fabian Sunden (Sweden). Gill competed in the Firestone Invitational in 2015, while Morgan and Sunden will be making their collegiate debut. In addition, sophomore Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio) will compete as an individual.
The 15-team field includes host Marshall, Akron, Belmont, Cleveland State, Dayton, Davidson, Eastern Kentucky, Longwood, Northern Kentucky, Ohio, Radford, Wichita State, William & Mary, Wright State, and Youngstown State.
