Final-Minute Goal Lifts Loyola (Md.) to 1-0 Win over Akron in Exhibition Play

AKRON, Ohio – Nico Brown's goal in the 90th minute (89:21) broke open a scoreless exhibition battle between Akron and Loyola (Md.) and lifted the Greyhounds to a 1-0 triumph past the Zips on Saturday, Aug. 19, at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field.
Brown's game-winner from 10 yards out came off a pass from the top of the box by David Gunter.
Sparked by an 8-2 advantage in second-half shots, Loyola bettered Akron in shots on the afternoon, 12-10, with each side collecting three shots on goal.
The Zips best opportunity to register a goal occurred in the 22nd minute as senior Sam Gainford (Liverpool, England) had a shot blocked at the 21:16 mark, before his rebound strike nailed the post at the 21:22 mark. Sophomore Marcel Zajac (Mississauga, Ontario) followed with a shot on net that was saved by Loyola goalkeeper Chase Vosvick.
Sophomore Nick Hinds' (Plantation, Fla.) header attempt in the 32nd minute (31:48) struck the crossbar to keep the contest scoreless.
The Zips entered halftime in a 0-0 contest, despite outshooting the Greyhounds in the initial stanza, 8-4.
Junior Ben Lundt (Berlin, Germany) recorded a pair of saves in net for the Zips, while Vosvick posted three stops en route to earning the shutout.
Gainford paced Akron with a game-high three shots, while Hinds and Zajac added two shots each. Barry Sharifi led the Greyhounds with three shots.
The Zips played their starters for the entire first half and into the second half before allowing 10 reserves to garner playing time over the final period.
Akron now turns its attention to its season opener on Friday, Aug. 25, as the 16th-ranked Zips travel to Orem, Utah, to face Utah Valley in a 9 p.m. ET tilt.

Union streets) Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Discounted general admission season tickets for Akron faculty/staff are also available for $48 and must be purchased in person or on the phone. Additionally, general admission family plans ($200), which include a combination of two adult and two youth tickets or one adult and three youth tickets, are available for the fall at this time.
Individual single-game tickets for all of Akron's home matches are now on sale.
As another option, all Akron Alumni are eligible to purchase the Alumni all-sport season-ticket package for $175, which includes general admission season tickets for men's and women's soccer, volleyball, men's and women's basketball, and a reserved seat for football.
Group experiences that include discounted tickets are on sale now for a minimum of 15 people. These include line-up buddies when the players are announced and chances to be ball boys during the game.
