NORMAN, Okla. – For the third straight year, a pair of Akron men's golfers were named Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars as senior Zach Gollwitzer (Ballwin, Mo.) and junior George Baylis (Ascot, England) earned the prestigious honors, the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) announced on Wednesday.
Â
"I am extremely proud of Zach and George," Zips' seventh-year head coach David Trainor said. "They worked very hard this year, and this honor is a culmination of their hard work, both in the classroom and on the course. I can't thank the both of them enough for their hard work and how they represented themselves and Akron Zips men's golf program."
Â
The duo marks the 12th and 13th recipients of this award in Akron's program history and eighth under Trainor in six seasons. In addition, Gollwitzer and Baylis each collected their second Mid-American Conference All-Academic awards in 2016-17.
Â
Gollwitzer, making his first appearance as an All-America Scholar, graduated in May with a corporate finance degree. He made eight appearances on the Dean's List, while maintaining a 3.869 overall grade point average.
Â
On the course, Gollwitzer played in 10-of-12 events this season. He was fourth in team scoring with a 75.48 stroke average and ranked 34th overall in the MAC. Gollwitzer posted five rounds of par or better and carded a season-low 218 (+2) at Akron's Firestone Invitational. In his final MAC Championship appearance, he finished tied for 14th overall with a 298 (+10) 72-hole total, and ended his collegiate career with a 2-under par 70 performance.
Â
Baylis, a psychology major, also made his debut as an All-America Scholar. He made one appearance on the Dean's List and maintains a 3.231 GPA while leading the Zips' men's golf team.
Â
Baylis posted Akron's second-best stroke average at 74.72 strokes per outing. He ranks 29th overall in MAC play after competing in all 12 of the Zips' events. Baylis led Akron's scoring twice this season while turning-in four Top 25 finishes, including a season's best 1-under par 212 tournament total at the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate. Baylis fired nine rounds of par or better throughout the 2016-17 campaign and tied for 19th overall at the MAC Championships with a 300 (+12) effort.
Â
A total of 260 Division I men's golfers received the honor. To be eligible for Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 50 percent of his team's competitive rounds, have a stroke-average under 76.0, and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
