AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's tennis team will host its annual Akron Shootout in the fall and 12 matches in the spring as part of it 2017-18 schedule which was announced on Tuesday.
"I'm excited about our schedule this year," said Akron head coach Brandon Padgett, who enters his eighth season as the Zips' mentor. "Our roster has a good blend of upper and underclassmen, which I feel will benefit us greatly with the quality of matches that we will be playing. I purposely put together a schedule that mirrors our roster, with a blend of Power 5 and mid-major non-conference matches that will allow our entire roster to be challenged to consistently prove themselves, as they work to solidify their place in the line-up."
The Zips open their fall slate at home with Akron Shootout on Sept. 22-24. This year's participants include Cleveland State, Oakland, and Youngstown State.
UA hits the road for invitational play, visiting Wright State (Sept. 29-30), Cleveland State (Oct. 6-8), and Youngstown State (Nov. 4-5). Select individuals will participate in the ITA Regional Championships on Oct. 12-16 in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Akron opens the spring schedule with four road matches– at Detroit Mercy (Jan. 19), Pitt (Jan. 20), St. Bonaventure (Jan. 26), and Niagara (Jan. 26). UA returns to Ohio to host Wright State on Jan. 28.
The Zips travel to East Lansing, Mich., to face Utah State (Feb. 3) and host Michigan State (Feb. 4).
UA returns home for four matches, hosting Tennessee (Feb. 9), Walsh (Feb. 9), West Virginia (Feb. 16), and East Tennessee State (Feb. 18).
Akron travels west to visit Kansas State (Feb. 23) and UMKC (Feb. 24). UA entertains Oakland (March 3) and Butler (March 3) before visiting Cleveland State (March 6). The Zips host Youngstown State (March 17).
On March 23, Akron opens Mid-American Conference play at Eastern Michigan. UA hosts Toledo on March 23 before taking Spring Break off to train.
MAC road action resumes at Bowling Green (March 30) and Miami (April 1). Akron closes the regular season with home MAC matches with Buffalo (April 14) and Ball State (April 22).
The 2018 MAC Championships are slated for April 27-29 on the campus of Ball State (Muncie, Ind.).
Akron's home matches are played on campus at the outside tennis facility or inside at the LaTuchie Tennis Center in Stow.
Akron finished the 2016-17 season with a 23-4 overall record and a second-place finish in the Mid-American Conference with 7-1 mark. UA set the school record with a 22-match winning streak (Feb. 4-April 22) and was undefeated in conference play until the final regular-season match. The Zips return seniors Ariadna Blinova (Riga, Latvia) and Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany), who won back-to-back MAC Player of the Year honors; Carli Knezevich (Austin, Texas), and Waverly Wituski (Springboro, Ohio). UA also welcomes three newcomers in the fall– freshmen Anna Uljanov (Schweinfurt, Germany), Miruna Vasilescu (Ulm, Germany), and Madison Wolfe (Monument, Colo.)
"I believe that our incoming freshmen will immediately infuse a high level of energy to our team, and a competitive spirit that will be good for our upperclassmen," Padgett added. "Our three newcomers are going to fit in wonderfully with the fantastic group of young women that we have returning, and I can't wait to get started working with all of them."
