FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. – University of Akron seniors A.J. Coney (Orlando, Fla.) and Zach Guiser (Fayette City, Pa.) have been named to the Watch List for the 2017 Wuerffel Trophy, the award's committee announced on Tuesday.
The preseason list contains 108 players for consideration of the award honoring college football's top community servant.
The Wuerffel Trophy, known as "College Football's Premier Award for Community Service," is presented annually by the All Sports Association in Fort Walton Beach, Fla. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel from the University of Florida, the Wuerffel Trophy is awarded to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.
Nominations for the Wuerffel Trophy are made by the respective universities' sports information departments and will close on October 13. A current list of nominees can be found at www.wuerffeltrophy.org, beginning August 1. Semifinalists for the award will be announced on Nov. 2, and finalists will be announced on November 22. Voting for the Wuerffel Trophy is performed by a National Selection Committee that includes college football television and print media, industry notables, former head coaches, and prior Wuerffel Trophy recipients.
The formal announcement of the 2017 recipient will be made at the National Football Foundation's press conference in New York City on December 5.
The presentation of the 2017 Wuerffel Trophy will occur at the 49th Annual All-Sports Association Awards Banquet on February 16, 2018, in Fort Walton Beach, Fla.
Coney, a wide receiver, played in all 12 games with three starts last fall. He had 15 receptions for 173 yards and a touchdown on the season and also saw action on the kickoff return unit. Coney was named the team's offensive MVP in the weight room following spring drills.
Guiser, a safety, was named a 2017 pre-season fourth-team All-MAC honoree by Athlon Sports. Last fall, he was a first-team Academic All-American, just the second in program history. Also named a MAC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete and Academic All-MAC selection, Guiser played in nine games with eight starts at free safety. He finished fourth on the defense with 53 tackles, 2.0 TFL, a sack, an interception, a blocked punt, and two break-ups.
Both Zips have participated in all of the team's community service projects and are instrumental in rallying their teammates to participate. Recent activities include visits to the Akron Children's Hospital, Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank, Haven of Rest, One-of-Kind Pet Rescue, and area youth football camps.
Under the guidance of sixth-year head coach Terry Bowden, Akron returns 57 letterwinners, including 15 starters, to its spread offense and 4-3 defense. The Zips open the 2017 season at Penn State on Saturday, Sept. 2, at Noon on ABC. In the home opener, Akron hosts Arkansas Pine Bluff on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 6:30 p.m. on ESPN3.
Season ticket plans—which include a ticket to all six home games as well as a parking pass—start at only $60 each.
