Gollwitzer, Baylis, Appleby Earn Academic All-MAC Awards for Men's Golf

Cleveland, Ohio – The Akron Zips men's golf team placed three golfers on the Mid-American Conference All-Academic team as senior Zach Gollwitzer (Ballwin, Mo.), junior George Baylis (Ascot, England), and sophomore Jacob Appleby (North Canton, Ohio) earned Academic All-MAC honors, the league announced Friday.
"Our entire team works hard in the classroom. And, to be great in the classroom and on the golf course is simply fantastic," Zips' head coach David Trainor said. "Zach, George, and Jacob have done extremely well in the classroom, and they are commended for their hard work. I am extremely proud of them and their efforts."
A total of 21Â student-athletes were named to this year's All-MAC squad as Gollwitzer and Baylis collected the award for a second time, while Appleby makes his first appearance.
Gollwitzer, a corporate finance major, garnered his second-career Academic All-MAC award. In his academic career, Gollwitzer has made seven appearances on the Dean's List, while maintaining a 3.863 overall grade point average and one semester remaining.
On the course, Gollwitzer played in 10-of-12 events this season. He was fourth in team scoring with a 75.48 stroke average and ranked 34th overall in the MAC. Gollwitzer posted five rounds of par or better and carded a season-low 218 (+2) at Akron's Firestone Invitational. In his final MAC Championship appearance, he finished tied for 14th overall with a 298 (+10) 72-hole total, and ended his collegiate career with a 2-under par 70 performance.
Baylis, a psychology major, also makes his second appearance as an Academic All-MAC honoree. He made one appearance on the Dean's List and maintains a 3.254 GPA while leading the Zips' men's golf team.
Baylis posted Akron's second-best stroke average at 74.72 strokes per outing. He ranks 29th overall in MAC play after competing in all 12 of the Zips' events. Baylis led Akron's scoring twice this season while turning-in four Top 25 finishes, including a season's best 1-under par 212 tournament total at the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate. Baylis fired nine rounds of par or better throughout the 2016-17 campaign and tied for 19th overall at the MAC Championships with a 300 (+12) effort.
Rounding out the Academic All-MAC award winners was Appleby as a public relations major. Appleby makes his first appearance on the all-academic squad with a 3.711 overall GPA and one appearance on the Dean's List.
Appleby played in 9-of-12 events this season for the Zips and was fifth in team scoring with a 76.88 stroke average. He ranked 41st overall in the MAC and led Akron's scoring on two occasions. Appleby posted four rounds of par or better and carded an individual season-low 218 (+5) 54-hole total. Appleby finished tied for 19th overall at the MAC Championships with Baylis.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.Â
