MAC Championships: Akron Finishes Sixth Overall, Grayson Leads Zips' Scoring

Nashport, Ohio – The Akron Zips men's golf team finished sixth overall at the Mid-American Conference Men's Golf Championships after a fourth and final round 297 (+9) en route to a 1,191 (+39) tournament total on Sunday.Â
Sophomore Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) led the Zips' scoring as Eastern Michigan hosted the MAC Championships at the par 72 Virtues Golf Course that spans 7,243 yards. Grayson finished 13th overall after firing his third consecutive 73 (+1) score. He completed his second MAC Championships event with a 297 (+9) ledger.Â
Kent State established an early lead by the end of the first round, and was able to maintain the lead over 72 holes to be crowned the 2017 MAC Champions with a 3-under par 1,149 team performance. KSU's Gisli Sveinbergsson earned the tournament's top honor, claiming medalist honors with an 8-under par 280-stroke 72-hole effort. With the win, the Golden Flashes one point for the Crystal Clinic Wagon Wheel Challenge to take a 0ne-point 6.5-5.5 lead in the rivalry.Â
Senior Zach Gollwitzer (Ballwin, Mo.) used his final round of MAC play to card his lowest score of the season and lowest score of the day for Akron. Gollwitzer posted a 2-under par 70 final round and climbed 14 spots to finish tied at 14th overall with a 298 (+10) tournament total. During his last round as a Zip, he recorded 10 pars, six birdies, a bogey, and triple bogey. He started the round with five straight pars before he recorded the bogey on the par-4 18th hole. He followed with four additional pars and fired back-to-back birdies for a 1-under ledger. After another par and the triple bogey, Gollwitzer finished his collegiate career with four consecutive birdies.Â
Also finishing in the Top 20 were junior George Baylis (Ascot, England) and sophomore Jacob Appleby (North Canton, Ohio). Baylis and Appleby both carded 77 (+5) final round scores and tied at 19th overall with 300 (+12) tournament totals.Â
Rounding out the Zips' scoring was senior Yann Pfeiffer (Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche, France). Pfeiffer finished tied for 33rd overall with a 305 (+17) total after a 78 (+6) final round effort. Pfeiffer his final MAC event with a pair of 76 (+4) scores and followed with a third round 75 (+3) tally.Â
The 2017 MAC Championships concludes the Zips' 2016-17 campaign.Â
