Aiken, S.C. – The Akron men's golf team fired a second round 283 (+3) to climb four spots on the leaderboard to No. 12 overall with a 585 (+25) at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate hosted by South Carolina Aiken on Monday.
After 18 holes at the 6,617-yard, par-70 Palmetto golf course, the Zips were 16th on the team leaderboard with a 302 (+22) first round total. The Zips bounced back by shaving 19 strokes off their second round total led by sophomore Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.). Grayson fired back-to-back 2-over par 72 scores and tied for 28th on the leaderboard with a 144 (+4) tally. He collected 24 pars, six bogeys, and four birdies in 36 holes of play.
Senior J.B. Williams (Danville, Ky.) followed an opening round 77 (+7) score with a 2-under par 68 total and finished second overall in scoring for the Zips with a 145 (+5) two-round score. During his second trip around the course, Williams carded 12 pars, four birdies and a bogey en route to a 37th finish on the leaderboard.
Junior George Baylis (Ascot, England) also improved during round No. 2, cutting six strokes from his opening round effort. Baylis recovered from a 76 (+6) score with a even-par 70 performance. He climbed five spots on the leaderboard to 42nd overall with a 146 (+6) 36-hole total.
Senior Zach Gollwitzer (Ballwin, Mo.) and sophomore Jacob Appleby (North Canton, Ohio) each recorded opening round 77 (+7) scores. Gollwitzer fired back with a four-stroke improvement 73 (+3), while Appleby finished one stroke better 76 (+6). Gollwitzer is currently tied for 61st with a 150 (+10), and Appleby is 77th with a 153 (+13).
Virginia leads the team scoring with a 17-under par 543 showing after two rounds followed closely by Clemson with a 14-under 546 total. Derek Bard (Virginia) and Doc Redman (Clemson) are tied at the top of the leaderboard 6-under par 134 tournament totals.Â
Tuesday's final round is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. Akron will tee-off at holes 10-12. Â Fans can follow the action via GolfStat Live Scoring.
