Greenville, S.C. – The Akron men's golf team posted a 296 (+8) opening round team score at the 48th annual Furman Intercollegiate on Friday.
Furman is hosting the event at the par-72, 6,994-yard Furman University Golf Cousre. The 54-hole event spans three days, and Georgia Southern sits atop the team standings with a 279 (-9). In addition, Georgia Southern's Brett Barron fired a 9-under par 63 score to set the tournamnet's all-time lowest round record. He currently leads the individual scoring by three strokes.
Akron is currently tied with Presbyterian for 15th overall as sophomore Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) leads the team scoring with a 1-over par 73 first-round tally. Senior Yann Pfeiffer (Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche, France) and junior George Baylis (Ascot, England) finished second for the Zips with a pair of 74 (+2) performances, while senior Zach Gollwitzer (Ballwin, Mo.) carded a 75 (+3) in the fourth spot. Freshman Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio) rounded out the team scoring with a 82 (+10) effort.
In addition, sophomore Jacob Appleby (North Canton, Ohio) is currently the highest ranked Akron golfer with an even-par 72 score for 27th overall.
The Zips are scheduled to begin the second round at 1:50 p.m., starting at hole No. 1 with McFarland leading off. Gollwitzer follows with a 2 p.m. tee time, while Pfeiffer is scheduled for a 2:10 p.m. start. Baylis and Grayson complete the team's starting times at 2:20 and 2:30 p.m., respectively. In addition, Appleby will be starting at hole No. 1, beginning at 1:40 p.m.
