Zips Finish Fifth, Baylis Climbs 30 Spots on the Leaderboard

Hilton Head – The Akron Zips men's golf team finished the Wexford Intercollegiate fifth overall, firing a final round 296 (+8) en route to a 891 (+27) tournament total. Junior George Baylis (Ascot, England) led the Zips' scoring, climbing 30 spots on the leaderboard with a 3-under par 69 to finish 15th overall at the par-72 the Wexford Plantation that stretches 6,913 yards on Tuesday.
Akron posted sub-300 stroke scores in all three rounds, finishing the initial 18-holes in first with a 297 (+9), and following with a 298 (+10) tally to end the first day with a fifth place 595 (+19) score. The Zips fired their lowest round on the final day of competition, 296 (+8) to remain the No. 5 ranked team.
Gardner-Webb won the tournament with an 882 (+18) 54-hole score, while Winthrop earned runner-up (886, +22) and South Carolina Aiken and Radford tied for third (888, +24).
Radford's Myles Creighton won medalist honors with rounds of 71 (-1), 73 (+1), and 68 (-4) for a 4-under par 212 tournament total. Vincent Blanchette, Gardner-Webb, garnered runner-up accolades with 71-71-73 – 215 (-1) scores.
For Akron, senior J.B. Williams (Danville, Ky.) finished in the Top 10 with a 220 (+4) three-round total. He fired scores of 71 (-1) and 73 (+1) to enter the final round at even-par. Williams carded 76 (+4) on the last 18-holes to lead the Zips' scoring efforts.
Baylis followed with the 15th place finish, while senior Zach Gollwitzer (Ballwin, Mo.) and sophomore Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) completed the event in 29th and 39th places, respectively. Gollwitzer shot a 226 (+10) and Grayson turned in a 228 (+12) performance.
Rounding out the Zips' scoring was senior Yann Pfeiffer (Saint-Nom-la-Breteche, France). Pfeiffer opened the event with a 75 (+3) and finished with a 76 (+4), and couldn't overcome an 82 (+10) performance in round two.
The Zips will be back in action on Monday and Tuesday, March 6-7, for the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate hosted by South Carolina Aiken at the Palmetto Golf Course.
