Hilton Head – The Akron Zips opened the spring schedule with a fifth place showing after 36 holes at the Wexford Intercollegiate on Monday. The Zips fired rounds of 297 (+9) and 298 (+10) for a 595 (+19) total at the par-72 the Wexford Plantation that stretches 6,913 yards.
South Carolina Aiken and Radford are tied at the top of the team scoring with 588 (+12), while Gardner-Webb and Winthrop follow at third (589, +13) and fourth (593, +17), respectively. Mercer is also in fifth place with the Zips.
Senior and J.B. Williams (Danville, Ky.) led the Zips with a 1-under par 71 and a 1-over par 73 to finish the day even at 144 strokes. He is currently tied for sixth on the leaderboard. In two rounds, Williams collected 21 pars, eight birdies, six bogeys and one double bogey.
Senior Zach Gollwitzer (Ballwin, Mo.) finished second in team scoring while tying for 20th overall. He recorded rounds of 72 (E) and 77 (+5) for a 149 (+5) stroke total. Gollwitzer registered 25 pars and four birdies with five bogeys and two doubles.
Junior George Baylis (Ascot, England) and sophomore Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) followed with a pair of 153 (+9) scores, placing tied for 45th overall. Both, Baylis and Grayson opened with 79 (+7) 18-hole scores and finished with 74 (+2) tallies.
Rounding out the Zips' scoring was senior Yann Pfeiffer (Saint-Nom-la-Breteche, France) with a 157 (+13) on rounds of 75 (+3) and 82 (+10).
Tuesday's final is scheduled for a shotgun start at 8:15 a.m. ET. Akron will start on holes No. 4-6. Fans can follow the action via GolfStat Live Scoring.
