Men's Golf Opens Spring Schedule at the Wexford Intercollegiate in Hilton Head

Akron, Ohio – The Akron Zips men's golf team opens its spring schedule at Hilton Head Island, S.C. for the 12th-annual Wexford Intercollegiate hosted by Francis Marion on Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 27-28. The 54-hole tournament is scheduled to be played at at the Wexford Plantation course, an Arnold Palmer signature course, measures 6,913 yards and is a par 72 layout.
"We are looking forward to getting this spring season underway," said head coach David Trainor. "I know there will be rust, but I also know we can play good smart conservative golf. I look forward to seeing what our guys can do."
The 18-team field includes host Francis Marion, Akron, Cleveland State, Dartmouth, Davidson, Dayton, Eastern Kentucky, Gardner-Webb, Hartford, High Point, Mercer, Oakland, Presbyterian, Radford, Siena, USC Aiken, Winthrop, and Wofford.
Akron's five-man lineup includes seniors Yann Pfeiffer (Saint-Nom-la-Breteche, France), Zach Gollwitzer (Ballwin, Mo.) and J.B. Williams (Danville, Ky.) along with junior George Baylis (Ascot, England) and sophomore Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.).
The Wexford Intercollegiate is scheduled to begin on Monday, Feb. 27 with a shotgun start at 8:00 a.m. ET with continuous play through 36 holes. Akron will start on holes No. 1-3. Fans can follow the action via GolfStat Live Scoring.
Campbell University won last year's event by 15 strokes, while Wofford captured the 2015 event. USCA previously won the 2014, 2006, and 2009 tournaments. Other past winners include Elon University (2008) Georgia Southern (2013), Georgia State University (2012), Indiana University (2011), Wake Forest University (2010), University of Tennessee-Chattanooga (2007). Wofford's Andrew Novak was last year's medalist with a 13-under-par tally.
For Akron, Grayson finished tied at 24th overall with a 221 stroke tournament total with scores of 77 (+5), 73 (+1), and 71 (-1). Williams was third in team scoring, moving up 13 spots to finish 55th overall with a 230-stroke total. Williams used rounds of 79 (+7), 76 (+4), and 75 (+3).
Baylis and Pfeiffer rounded out the team scoring with 231 (61st) and 232 (69th) 54-hole totals, respectively. Baylis carded scores of 79 (+7), 76 (+4), and (76 (+4) while Pfeiffer recorded rounds of 84 (+12), 69 (-3), and 79 (+7). In addition, Gollwitzer moved up 10 slots on the leaderboard by carding rounds of 76 (+4), 75 (+3), and 73 (+1) for a 33rd best 224 (+8) score.
