AKRON, Ohio- After the first day of competition of the Zippy Invitational at the Ocasek Natatorium, the Akron swimming and diving team broke three pool records and found themselves atop the standings after the initial seven events with a score of 687.5 on Friday Night.

The Zips' swimmers came in first-place in three of the swimming events, while on the boards, Akron had two top-three performances in the one-meter diving event.

The Zips lead the women's competition with 687.5 total points, followed by Buffalo (490), and Bowling Green with 402. On the men's side of the competition Oakland leads with 681.5 points, in second is St. Bonaventure with 416, and Clarion in third with 381.

Akron jumped off of the blocks quickly in the first finals round of the evening in the 200 freestyle relay. The relay squad of junior Sadie Fazekas (Windsor, Ontario), senior Susan Franz (Canton, Ohio), sophomore Morgan Waggoner (Fremont, Ohio), and junior Madison Myers (Akron, Ohio) broke a conference and school record clocking in at 1:29.71.

In the first individual event, the 500 freestyle, freshman Brooke Lamoureux (Trenton, Ontario) followed up with a first-place finish with a time of 4:48.53, which put her atop the top-ten fastest times of the program. Senior Paloma Marrero Munoz (Merida, Spain) clocked in with a 2:00.48 first-place time in the 200 IM.

In the 50 freestyle sprint, Myers and Fazekas claimed second and third spots with a 22.72 and 22.74 time, respectively.

Prior to the final events, the one-meter diving portion of the invitational took place. With a score of 266.50, junior Karly Crail (Edgewood, Ky.) placed second overall, followed by sophomore Katelyn Applin (Dansville, N.Y.) in third with a 261.70 score.

In the final swimming event of the night, Myers, Marrero Munoz, freshman Paulina Nogaj (Radom, Poland), and Fazekas broke the Ocasek pool record in the 400 medley relay in a swift time of 3:34.83. The previous record was 3:36.66 and was set by Toledo in 2012.

The Zippy Invitational continues tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 2, with prelims starting at 9 a.m. Diving prelims are set to follow at approximately 1 p.m., with finals starting at 6 p.m.

Tickets for each individual prelim session are $6, while tickets to the final sessions are $8 each. Spectators may also purchase a $35 pass, good for entry to each session throughout the weekend. Tickets must be paid for in cash and will be available 90 minutes prior to the start of each session. Heat sheets will also be for sale for $2.

Admission for Akron students is FREE with a valid Zip Card.
