Eastern Michigan Edges Zips in the Pool

YPSILANTI, Mich.- Â The University of Akron swimming and diving team closed out its weekend road trip against Eastern Michigan as the Eagles would come out on top over the Zips, 162-138 at the Michael H. Jones Natatorium Saturday afternoon.

The Zips opened competition in the 200-medley relay with a second-place finish. The Akron relay team of junior Madison Myers (Akron, Ohio), senior Paloma Marrero Munoz (Merida, Spain), freshman Paulina Nogaj (Radom, Poland), and junior Sadie Fazekas  (Windsor, Ontario) clocked in with a time of 1:43.03.

Freshman Brooke Lamoureux  (Trenton, Ontario) swam a top-three time in the 1000 freestyle, good for a second-place finish touching the wall at 10:11.92.

Akron would go on to claim the 200 freestyle with sophomore Jackie Pash (Carmel, Ind.)Â clocking in at a 1:52.18 first-place time, followed by sophomore Ellie Nebraska (Columbus, Ohio) who placed third with a 1:54.40 time.

The Zips took first-place in the next three events, the 100 breast, 200 fly, and the 50 freestyle. Marrero swam the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.71, while her fellow Zip freshman Paula Garcia (Madrid, Spain) placed second overall in 1:05.22. Nogaj placed first in the 200 fly with a 2:02.49, with sophomore Jessica Bonezzi (Wooster, Ohio) right behind with a 2:04.53. Fazekas won the 50-freestyle sprint with a 23.81 time. Â

On the boards, junior Karly Crail (Edgewood, Ky) and sophomore Katelyn Applin (Dansville, N.Y.) placed fourth and fifth in the three-meter dive. Crail earned a total score of 245.71, while Applin tallied a 233.10.

Crail also placed fourth overall in the one-meter after being scored a 237 by the judges.

Akron finished strong in the pool with first-place finishes in the 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, and the 200 IM with the Zips earning the top-three spots. Nogaj led the 100 freestyle with another first-place finish at 51.85, followed by sophomore Morgan Waggoner (Fremont, Ohio) who placed second with a 52.38. Marrero earned another win with a 2:15.83 time in the 200 breaststroke. In the 200 IM, Akron took the top-three spots with Nogaj touching the wall first with a 2:05.44, followed by Pash (2:05.93), and Garcia claiming third at 2:08.01.
In the final event of the day, the 400-freestyle relay, the squad of Nebraska, Waggoner, senior Susan Franz (Canton, Ohio), and Marrero placed second in with a 3:28.08 time that awarded the Zips four points.

The Zips are back in the pool in two weeks, Nov. 17-19, as Akron travels up I-71 to take part in the Magnus Cup Invitational hosted by Cleveland State.
