Zips Swimming and Diving Capture Third Consecutive Magnus Cup

AKRON, Ohio- The University of Akron swimming and diving team retained its crown at the 2017 Magnus Cup Invitational for the third consecutive year after a dominating performance with 23 first-place finishes this weekend at the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium.

Combined on the weekend, the Zips totaled 1,809.5 points for the win, while Duquesne placed second overall with 1,315, followed by Xavier with 909 points for third.

Following the three-day invitational, the Zips now own nine pool records at the Busbey Natatorium.

Akron went back-to-back in the distance event, the 1650 freestyle. Freshman Brooke Lamoureux (Trenton, Ontario) claimed the top spot with her time of 16:41.31, which set a new meet record and a top-ten time in program history. Â The previous record was 16:49.01, which was set back in 2014. Sophomore Mackenzie Vargas (Roseville, Cali.) followed closely behind and placed second with a time of 16:56.56.

In the second event, junior Madison Myers (Akron, Ohio) swam the 100 IM in a blazing time of 54.50. Her time is the fastest in the nation in the event to date, according to college swimming.com. The 54.50 time also smashed the meet record of 55.22 last set last season.

In the 50 fly, Paulina Nogaj (Radom, Poland) touched the wall first with a time of 24.78. Junior Sadie Fazekas (Windsor, Ontario) won the 100 freestyle event with a new meet record of 49.8. This time beats the previous record (49.94) that was set in 2013. In the 200 breaststroke, senior Paloma Marrero Munoz (Merida, Spain) set a personal-best and new school record with a first-place time of 2:09.96.

Fazekas again claimed the top spot in the 50 backstroke after swimming a 25.06, which set a meet record that was previously set by teammate Myers in 2015 (25.48).

The 400 freestyle relay concluded the weekend festivities, and once again the Akron relay team owned the event. The squad of Myers, Nogaj, sophomore Morgan Waggoner (Fremont, Ohio), and senior Susan Franz (Canton, Ohio) won the event with a time of 3:22.94.

The Zips are back in action Dec. 1-3, as Akron hosts its annual Zippy Invitational at the Ocasek Natatorium.
