CLEVELAND, Ohio – The University of Akron women's tennis team claimed a pair of doubles wins on Saturday at the Viking Invitational, hosted by Cleveland State.
The Zips fell in singles action to Cincinnati, 5-1. In doubles action, UA dropped a pair of 2-1 matches to Cleveland State and to West Virginia.
In doubles action, junior Luisa Echeverry (Cali, Colombia) and senior Waverly Wituski (Springboro, Ohio) claimed a pair of wins at No. 3 doubles. The duo defeated Cleveland State's Blanche Lenoan and Anastasia Perin, 7-5, and West Virginia's Abigail Rosiello and Yvon Martinez, 7-6 (4).
"Today was much better from a doubles perspective," said head coach Brandon Padgett. "We were much more competitive in all six matches played. We put ourselves in position to win each match, which shows definite progress."
In singles action, the lone Zips' win came from freshman Madison Wolfe (Monument, Colo.) at the No. 4 spot as she beat Cincinnati's Ali Miller, 5-7, 7-6 (4), ret.
"Our singles play was up and down today, but overall, I am pleased with how the team played," Padgett said. "This tournament packs a lot of tennis into a small window of time, and we do not have the available players right now to rest anyone throughout the weekend, like all three of the other teams do. In the end, this fact will benefit our team, as they fight through soreness, and metal and physical exhaustion, pushing themselves further than they thought they could go."
Play concludes at the Viking Invitational on Sunday, Oct. 8, as the Zips face Cincinnati n doubles action at 11:30 a.m., followed by singles against host Cleveland State. All matches will be played at CSU's Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion (2005 Chester Avenue).
"We need more match play in order to continue to learn and develop, and some of our players need to do a better job of dealing with adversity. As a coach, you learn a lot about an individual during a changeover. Our job is to find ways to reach each player, and their job is to listen, and communicate in a positive manner. Negativity rarely produces positive outcomes, and we as coaches, won't coach a negative player. This job is a difficult one, so focusing on the positives is what we try to do, while working to minimize the negativity."
