COLLEGE SOCCER NEWS MEN'S SOCCER NATIONAL TEAM OF THE WEEK RELEASE
AKRON, Ohio – University of Akron men's soccer senior Stuart Holthusen (Auckland, New Zealand) added an honor to his 2017 resume when College Soccer News named him to its Men's National Team of the Week on Monday, Oct. 30.
Additionally, Holthusen was honored as the Akron Athletics' Summa Health Student-Athlete of the Week.
Holthusen turned in a strong week to spark the Zips (12-3-1) to a pair of road victories over No. 20 Pittsburgh (3-0) and No. 25 West Virginia (4-0), registering three goals, while adding an assist.
In Akron's 4-0 triumph over the Mountaineers on Friday, Oct. 27, Holthusen collected his first-ever hat trick, recording goals on each of his three shots. The three goals are the most in a game by a player in the Mid-American Conference this season.
Akron broke through in a scoreless battle in the 37th minute (37:29) when Holthusen connected on his third goal of the season, one that proved to be the game-winner, to provide the Zips a 1-0 advantage.
He later added tallies at the 55:19 and 66:48 marks, respectively, to become the first Zip to notch a hat trick since Adam Najem on Oct. 28, 2014.
In the Zips' 3-0 win at Pittsburgh on Tuesday, Oct. 24, Holthusen earned an assist on the second of sophomore Nick Hinds' (Plantation, Fla.) two goals.
On the season, Holthusen paces Akron in shots (30) and game-winners (2), while ranking second in goals (5) and third in points (13) and shots on goal (13).
The fifth-ranked Zips return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 1, as Akron welcomes Marshall to FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field for a 7 p.m. tilt.
