Akron, Ohio – Senior George Baylis (Ascot, England) carded a bogey-free first round en route to leading the Akron Zips men's golf team to 1-under par 287 team score at Firestone Country Club on Monday.

Baylis ended the initial 18-holes with a 3-under 69 performance, consisting of 15 pars and three birdies. He finished the opening round tied four third overall.

Akron currently ranks second overall, trailing Illinois State by five strokes, 282 (-6), as junior Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) followed with a 1-under 71 effort. He carded nine pars, five birdies, and four bogeys to be tied for eighth overall, while junior Jacob Appleby (North Canton, Ohio) turned in a 73 (+1) scorecard. Appleby is currently tied for the 23rd position

Rounding out the scoring for the Zips were sophomore Mitchell McFarland (Wheelersburg, Ohio), and freshman Fabian Sunden (Sweden). McFarland recorded an eagle on hole No. 18 to finish with a 74 (+2) ledger, and Sunden completed the trek with a 75 (+3) score. After 18 holes, McFarland is tied for 31st, and Sunden is tied for 41st.

In addition, sophomore Euan Gill (Dingwall, Scotland) and junior Jacob Morgan (Lafayette, Ga.) competed as individuals, recording scores of 78 (+6) and 81 (+9) respectively.

The Zips are currently in the middle of second round action and appears to have jumped to the top of the leaderboard. A complete release including both rounds will be available later this evening.
