CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Akron women's soccer team scored three unanswered second-half goals, and four different players scored their first career goals in an Akron uniform to come from behind and defeat Cleveland State, 4-2, on Sunday afternoon at Krenzler Field.
"We showed a lot of character coming from behind. We started off very well with a great goal by Catie (Corrigan), but we got sloppy and gave away two goals in a matter of two minutes. We can't put ourselves in that situation but I give a lot of credit to the girls for coming back," said head coach Noreen Herlihy. "We had a talk with them at half time and told them we could win this game. The girls showed tremendous character in the second half. We are pleased for the players as they gave us their maximum effort, they deserved it."
On the day, Akron (2-3-0) outshot Cleveland State (2-4-0), 15-13, and the Zips tallied seven shots on goal. Akron and CSU attempted three corner kicks each.
Freshman Catie Corrigan (Avon Lake, Ohio) posted a team-high three shots with all three coming on frame, followed by sophomores Erica Schrader (Blacklick, Ohio) and Rachel Baughman (Alliance, Ohio) with a pair of shots each.
Senior Annabelle Hegeman (Frostburg, Md.) was solid in the net for the Zips stopping seven shots by the Vikings, including a crucial penalty kick.
The Zips started quickly in the offensive end of the field to take an early 1-0 advantage. Freshman Julia Crowe (Ann Arbor, Mich.) possessed the ball on the left side of the field and quickly made a move to the end line. The freshman looked into the box and found her freshman teammate Corrigan with space in the middle of the box and she ripped a shot to the far right side of the net for her first collegiate goal. Crowe tallied her team-best second assist of the year.
Cleveland State took advantage of a turnover by the Zips in their own offensive third at the 4:25 mark. After Hegeman made a save on the initial shot, the ball was rebounded and put in for the score.
On minute later in the 6' of play, the Vikings broke the 1-1 tie off a set piece from 20-yards out to the upper left corner of the net.
In the 37', senior Sarah Sivic (Broadview Heights, Ohio) received a pass from senior Abby Gindlesberger (Canton, Ohio) at the top of the box. The senior forward turned up field, planted, and a ripped a shot with her left foot that curled inches right of the far post.
Akron was able to knot up the game at two courtesy of freshman Ashley Amato's (Pittsburgh, Pa.) first collegiate goal at the 63:41 mark of the second half. After the Vikings last touched the ball at the end line, Corrigan headed over to the corner for a corner kick. The forward served the ball into the box that landed at the feet of Amato before she blasted the ball into the back of the net.
The Zips took advantage of a CSU mishap in Akron's offensive third. Schrader intercepted a Cleveland State pass, fought off a defender, and beat Daniels to the lower left side of the net. Schrader's goal was the first of the sophomores career as a Zip.
After Akron was called for a foul in box, the Vikings Kaila Sargema stepped up for a penalty kick and Hegeman stood poised in the net. Sargema sent the PK to the right side but a diving Hegeman denied the ball to end the threat.
Baughman joined in on the scoring affair to push the Akron lead to 4-2. Corrigan cleared the ball down the left sideline and out ran the Viking defender. Baughman who was sprinting down the far side received a cross pass from Corrigan, composed herself, and bent a shot to the left side out of the reach a diving Daniels.
The young Akron squad concluded the opening portion of its schedule, which included starting the year on the road for its first five contests.
Akron is slated to return to action on Thursday, Sept. 8, when the Zips host Robert Morris for the 2016 regular season home opener at FirstEnergy Stadium-Cub Cadet Field. The contest is set to begin at 7 p.m.
