AKRON, Ohio – Heading into the 90' of play and trailing, 1-0, freshman Ashley Amato (Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored the game-tying goal off a header to push the game into extra-time, leading the Zips to a double-overtime 1-1 draw with Toledo on Friday night at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field.
The goal was the freshman defenders first of her career. The Zips score was set up by a foul on the Rockets with 21 seconds to play. Freshman Amy Rogozinski (Westlake, Ohio) stepped up to the ball for a free kick 50 yards out along the right sideline. The freshman served a beautiful ball into the far side of the box and Amato connected with a header into the upper left corner of the goal. The assist by Rogoziniski was the first of her career.
Akron (3-6-2, 0-1-2 MAC) tallied 14 shots in the contest while the Rockets (6-4-1, 1-1-1 MAC) posted 17. The Zips offensive efforts were led by sophomores Rachel Baughman (Alliance, Ohio) and Erica Schrader (Blacklick, Ohio) who each boasted three shots with one of Baughman's landing on frame. Sophomore Shea O'Brien (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) tallied two shots for Akron, while six other Zips garnered a shot.
Senior goalkeeper Annabelle Hegeman (Frostburg, Md.) was clutch inside the post for the Zips for the 110 minutes of play. The senior keeper made three crucial saves in the first half to keep the contest close for the Zips. After 110 minutes had elapsed, Hegeman tallied seven saves total.
The game was a battle of two halves, as Toledo held the majority of possession in the initial 45 minutes, while the Zips took control of the second half and into the overtime periods.
The Zips first two shots in the contest came off the foot of Baughman and Rogozinski. The two Zips sent a shot towards the net off a set piece but each shot strayed wide of the goal.
Akron almost gained a 1-0 lead in the 29' of the play. The Zips played a ball into the box off a Rocket foul. Freshman Catie Corrigan (Avon Lake, Ohio) ripped a shot from the top of the box that was blocked by a defender. Freshman Julia Crowe (Ann Arbor, Mich.) corralled the rebound and sent a shot on goal that was made by the UT keeper.
Toledo broke a scoreless game at the 38:44 mark of the first half. Alena Sidwell received a pass that split a pair of Akron defenders up the middle of the offensive third. Hegeman came out of the box to make a play, but could not get to the ball before Sidwell got a shot off and scored.
The Zips came out of the locker room aggressive and looked to get the ball into their offensive third. The Zips tallied three shots in the first five minutes of the second stanza with two being saved by the Rockets keeper.
O'Brien nearly tied up the game in the 65' when she chipped the ball over the keepers head from just outside the box but the ball clanked off the corner of the post and out of bounds.
Baughman attempted to win the game for the Zips in the eighth minute of the first overtime period. The sophomore raced up the right side of the field and fired a curling shot on goal but the keeper stood tall for the save.
Akron's Schrader registered the only two shots in the second overtime period for either teams before the ten minutes had expired for a 1-1 draw.
The Zips return to action this Sunday, Oct. 2, at FirstEnergy Stadium. Akron hosts Bowling Green State University for an afternoon affair at 1 p.m.
