Zips Soccer Set For Showdown With Cleveland State

WHATS AHEAD
Akron is set for one contest this upcoming weekend on Sunday, Sept. 4, as the Zips are slated for a showdown with Cleveland State at Krenzler Field in Cleveland, Ohio at 1 p.m.
LAST WEEK
Akron traveled to Indiana for a pair of games with Indiana State and Butler. On Aug. 26, the Zips fell to the Sycamores, 2-0, despite holding the advantage in offensive possession and shots. Two days later, Akron put up a fight against the defending Big East Champions, Butler, but ultimately lost 2-0.
In total, the Zips tallied 19 shots combined in the two games in Indiana with 10 coming on goal. Freshman Amy Rogozinski (Westlake, Ohio)recorded a team-high five shots on the weekend followed by freshman Ashley Amato (Pittsburgh, Pa.) (3), and a handful of Zips with two each.
Senior Annabelle Hegeman (Frostburg, Md.) logged 180 minutes of work in two games, making 12 saves and allowed four goals in total. Hegeman owns a 1.50 GAA and .778 save percentage.
SCOUTING THE VIKINGS
With four games of the 2016 season under its belt, Cleveland State owns a 2-2 record. The Vikings are coming off a weekend in New York where they defeated Canisius (2-0) and Niagara (2-0) for their first two wins of 2016.
In total, CSU has recorded 36 shots, scored six goals and holds a shot on goal percentage of .444. Allie Lorenzo and Kaila Sargema own a team-high two goals each to lead the squad.
Goalkeeper Jamie Daniels has made the start in each of the Vikings four games. In 360 minutes of work, the junior has posted a 1.00 GAA, allowed four goals, and made 14 saves.
SERIES HISTORY
Akron and Cleveland State have met seven times on the pitch in program history with the Zips holding the advantage in the all-time series, 6-1. Most recently, Akron defeated the Vikings, 4-2, in 2015 at FirstEnergy Stadium-Cub Cadet Field.
COACHES
Cleveland State: Sonia Curvelo is in her third season as the head coach of the Vikings program. In her first two years at the helm, Curvelo has led CSU to a 16-18-4 overall record.
Akron: Noreen Herlihy is in her second year with the Akron women's soccer program and owns a 7-16-2 record with the Zips (all-time 257-129-32)
A LOOK BACK AT 2015
The Zips, guided by Herlihy, finished the year with a record of 6-13-2 overall and ended MAC play with a 3-8 record. Akron found themselves in the eighth spot of the MAC tournament thanks to a three-way tie between Akron, Ohio and Bowling Green. The Zips advanced to the semifinal round of the tournament for the first time in program history in part to defeating No. 1-seeded Ball State in penalty kicks. Akron's season later ended in the semifinals with a 1-0 loss to Miami (Ohio).

- Freshman Chloe Allen scored first two collegiate goals against Green Bay (8/21)
- Freshman Julia Crowe recorded her first collegiate assists vs. Green Bay (8/21)
- Junior Sydney Schipani recorded her first collegiate assists vs. Green Bay (8/21)
- Seven freshman started against Green Bay including the entire back line.
- Akron returns 13 letterwinners from the 2015 squad.
- New to the roster this year are 13 newcomers made up of 11 incoming freshman and two foreign transfers.
- Assistant coach Rob Battisson is in his second stint with the Zips program. He was an assistant coach in 2007.
- Three Zips' scored during Akron's lone exhibition match: Abby Gindlesberger, Sarah Sivic, Rachel Baughman.
- All 22 available players for the exhibition saw action including eight newcomers (8/14).
- Sarah Sivic is closing in on Akron's all-time career leader in goals (13-19) and one assist away from becoming the program leader in most career assists (11).
- Sivic's six goals last year are seventh most in a season.
- Sivic and Rachel Baughman posted four assists each last year and sit fourth all-time in mosts assists in a season.
- In just her first year with the program, Annabelle Hegeman posted the second most saves in a season (85) and sits at sixth all-time in career saves (85).
- Rachel Baughman, Abby Gindlesberger, Karin Norman, and Sarah Sivic all set a program-best 21 games played in a season last year.
- Gindlesberger and Sivic also started all 21 of those games.
