ROCHESTER, Mich. - A 38th-minute goal from Austin Ricci proved to be the game-winning tally which propelled Oakland to a 1-0 men's soccer exhibition victory past Akron on Monday, Aug. 15.
"We weren't sharp enough around goal tonight," Akron head coach Jared Embick commented. "We created many good chances, but we were unable to convert. We then made a mistake in our back half that led to their goal. In the first half, play was too slow and lacked enough intensity. I was pleased with our second half effort. A lot of the younger players stepped up and played well, they did everything right, but score the goal. We will get back to the basics and correct mistakes and be ready for Friday night."
The Zips bettered the Golden Grizzlies in shots on the evening, 11-5, but Akron was unable to convert on its scoring opportunities.
Senior Goncalo Soares (Lisbon, Portugal) led the Zips registering a game-high three shots, while eight other Akron players recorded a shot.
Sophomore Ben Lundt (Berlin, Germany) played the first half for the Zips in goal and netted one save, before yielding to freshman Jeremy Pollard (Sydney, Australia), who recorded one stop over the final 45 minutes of the contest.
Akron will close out its exhibition campaign on Friday, Aug. 19, as the Zips host Michigan in a 7:30 p.m. tilt at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field.
