NEW ORLEANS, La. - The University of Akron track and field team was rewarded for its efforts in the classroom as the Zips' women's squad was tabbed by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) as 2016 All-Academic Team recipient, the USTFCCCA unveiled this week.
A total of 220 women's and 122 men's teams earned the distinction as a result of earning a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or higher. The Akron women's squad recorded a 3.25 cumulative GPA.
Individually, Akron garnered 13 selections to the 2016 All-Academic Individual List, including the Zips' women's squad, with seven honorees.
"I am very proud of each these athletes reaching this accomplishment," Akron head track and field coach Dennis Mitchell commented. "These athletes success in both academics and sport is what most of college athletics is all about. It is a stated philosophy in our program that academics are first. However, such priorities do not diminish the opportunity to be the very best at both. In fact I believe academics can enhance athletic success. These athletes have proven that through good time management skills and dedication."
Earning All-Academic honors for the 2016 campaign from Akron were Quentin Cieslinski (3.478, exercise science), Megan Dornisch (3.332, marketing management), Claudia Garcia Jou (4.00, exercise science/exercise physiology), Caroline Hasse (4.00, psychology), Dara Perry (3.66), Rebecca Pietsch (4.00, organizational management), Curtis Richardson (3.591), Jackie Siefring (3.615, biomedical engineering), Casey Slane (3.441, chemical engineering), Cody Stine (3.276), Becky Szabo (3.439, chemical engineering), Dan Zupan (3.388, intervention mild/moderate) and Sean Weems (3.50, sport studies)
In all, a total of 910 women from 192 institutions and 570 men from 161 schools earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors for their combined academic and athletic accomplishments during the 2016 campaign.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met at least one of the following athletic standards:
• For the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org.
• For the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
