Hasse Garners First-Team All-America Honors on Day Two on NCAA Championships

EUGENE, Ore. – Senior Caroline Hasse (Potsdam, Germany) capped her University of Akron career capturing first-team All-America accolades on the strength of a seventh-place finish in the women's pole vault on the second day of the NCAA Track and Field Championships on Thursday, June 9, to lead the Zips' efforts at historic Hayward Field.
Hasse opened the women's pole vault clearing the initial height of 13-3.50 (4.15m) on her second attempt.
She followed eclipsing 13-9.25 (4.20m) on her first attempt to join nine other vaulters attempting 14-1.25 (4.30m). Dealing with a steady rain, Hasse was unable to clear the bar, but her efforts earned her a seventh-place tie and first-team All-America honors for the first time.
Senior Alex McCune (Pittsburgh, Pa.) concluded his collegiate career finishing 21st in the decathlon with a 10-event cumulative score of 6,572.
McCune opened the day finishing second in his section and 16th overall in the 110-meter hurdles registering a time of 14.99.
After fouling on his initial throw in the discus, McCune recorded a mark of 128-2 (39.07m) on his second throw. On his final attempt, he unfurled a throw of 140-7 (42.85m) to place sixth in the event.
Running concurrent with the discus was the pole vault, where McCune passed on the first two sets of bars before taking a run at 14-5.25 (4.40m). Unfortunately, he was unable to clear the height and didn't' register any points in the event.
McCune's top mark in the javelin came on his first throw as he registered a toss of 188-0 (57.30m) to place ninth.
He closed his evening running a time of 4:56.17 in the 1,500 meters to finish 21st.
Junior Clayton Murphy (New Paris, Ohio) will compete for the NCAA title for Akron in the 1,500 meters on Friday, June 10, at 8:42 p.m. ET.
Making their first appearances at the NCAA Championships in the men's high jump at 8 p.m. ET on Friday will be freshmen Curtis Richardson (Blacklick, Ohio) and Cody Stine (Shelby, Ohio). The Zips' duo is seeded third and 21st, respectively, after surpassing 7-1.50 (2.17m) and 6-11.75 (2.13m) at the NCAA East Preliminary Round on May 28.
Junior Phil Jagers (Solon, Ohio) will compete in the men's discus at 8:05 p.m. ET on Friday, June 10. The top-seeded thrower in the competition, Jagers set a school record in the event with a throw of 205-9 at the NCAA East Preliminary Round on May 27.
The women's heptathlon opens competition for the Zips also on Friday, with sophomore Jackie Siefring (Covington, Ohio) taking part in the 100-meter hurdles (3:30 p.m. ET), high jump (4:30 p.m. ET), shot put (6:30 p.m. ET) and 200 meters (10:13 p.m. ET).
