Pair of Weekend Meets Highlight Zips' Track and Field Slate

AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron track and field team ventures on the road this weekend as the Zips will compete in both the LSU Alumni Invitational on Saturday, April 23, and the Jesse Owens Track and Field Classic this Friday and Saturday, April 22-23.
The Jesse Owens Classic hosted by Ohio State will feature student-athletes from 20 schools including; Akron, Ball State, Belmont, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Central Florida, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, IPFW, Kent State, Miami University, Michigan, Michigan State, Oakland, Ohio, Ohio State, Toledo, West Virginia, Wright State, Youngstown State.
Friday features afternoon throwing events beginning at 2 p.m. before action gets underway on the track beginning at 6:45 p.m. Saturday field events commence at 10 a.m., with competition on the track set for noon.
Scheduled to compete for the Zips at the Jesse Owens Classic is freshman Ian Behm (Volant, Pa.), senior Megan Dornisch (St. Mary's, Pa.), freshman Eboni Hall, freshman Joe Harrington (Youngstown, Ohio), sophomore John Harris (Pickerington, Ohio), sophomore Maurice Harris (Toledo, Ohio), redshirt junior Demetris Hazly-Ward (Akron, Ohio), freshman Christian Herold (Lancaster, Ohio), junior Phil Jagers (Solon, Ohio), senior Bobby Mitman (Mansfield, Ohio), redshirt junior Ashleigh Nalty (George Town, Cayman Islands), freshman Ben Olewiler (Shiloh, Ohio), redshirt junior Alante Oliver (Dayton, Ohio), freshman Cierra Rembert-Murray (Euclid, Ohio), senior Zack Shull (Columbus, Ohio), senior Casey Slane (Marion, Ohio), freshmen Olivia Snyder (Navarre, Ohio), Sydney Stokes (Gahanna, Ohio) and Abigale Wilson (Carrollton, Ohio) and junior Keith Yohman (Brunswick, Ohio).
The bulk of the Akron squad will travel to Baton Rouge, La., to compete at the LSU Alumni Invitational on Saturday, April 23. The women's steeplechase will open running events at 9:30 a.m. ET before the women's discus kicks off field events at 10 a.m. CT. The meet will conclude with the running of the men's 4x400 relay at approximately 5:20 p.m. ET.
The 22-team field at the LSU Alumni Invitational includes; Akron, Arizona, Clemson, Connecticut, Hinds C.C., Iowa State, Louisiana, Louisiana-Monroe, Louisiana State, Louisiana Tech, McNeese State, Meridian CC, Mississippi State, New Orleans, Nicholls State, Northwestern State, Southeast Louisiana, Southern Miss, Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M Kingsville and Tulane.
Akron currently has nine student-athletes ranked in the top-25 nationally by the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS), including sophomore Terrell McClain (Youngstown, Ohio), who owns the No. 2 mark nationally in the men's long jump (26-1).
Also rated among the top-25 is senior Claudia Garcia Jou (Barcelona, Spain) (third in high jump/6-1.25), Jagers (fourth in discus/201-2), redshirt senior Caroline Hasse (Potsdam, Germany) (13th in pole vault/13-11.75), junior Clayton Murphy (New Paris, Ohio) (14th in the 800 meters/1:47.38), sophomore Jackie Siefring (Covington, Ohio) (14th in heptathlon/5,627 and 19th in 400M-hurdles/57.61), senior Joe Oduho (Erie, Pa.) (19th in long jump/25-3.25), junior Matt Rowland (Bellevue, Ohio) (20th in pole vault/17-4.50), redshirt junior Mike Ohiembor (Dayton, Ohio) (22nd in triple jump/51-4.25) and redshirt junior Quentin Cieslinski (Madison, Ohio) (24th in decathlon/7,109).
Additionally, the men's 4x400 relay quartet of junior Miles Baldwin (Cincinnati, Ohio), seniors Sean Weems (Maple Heights, Ohio) and Brent Gray (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Murphy own the 23rd-best time (3:07.36) in the nation.
