Women's Tennis Heads to Louisiana for a Pair of Matches

AKRON, Ohio — The Zips women's tennis team travels to the southern part of the United States this weekend to compete at Tulane on Saturday at 11 a.m. ET and Southeastern Louisiana on Monday at 3 p.m. ET. The trip begins a three-match road swing for the program, which maintains a 10-4 overall record and 3-3 mark in away contests this season.
The match against Tulane will take place at the City Park Pepsi Tennis Center in New Orleans, La. while Monday's match will be held at the Southeastern Tennis Complex in Hammond, La.
Akron comes off a 5-2 victory against Detroit last Saturday as the Zips played in the first ever dual match at the Outdoor Tennis Facility. UA posted its points by taking five of six singles matches. Sophomore Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) defeated Anna Davydova at the top spot, 6-1, 7-5 while fellow classmate Ariadna Blinova (Riga, Latvia) recorded a 6-3, 6-0 singles victory at the No. 2 slot against Valeryia Kulikovskaya.
Junior Karalina Maksimava (Mogilev, Belarus) played in her first singles match since Feb. 7 to beat Detroit's Irina Slizovskaya, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 3 position. Senior Martina Zerbola (Neuquen, Argentina) took down Viktoria Laskutova, 7-5, 6-2 after freshman Luisa Echeverry (Cali, Columbia) overpowered Iris Thioux, 6-3, 6-3.
The Zips and Southeastern Louisiana will meet for the first time on the tennis court, while UA and Tulane will face off for the fourth time ever following a tight 4-3 decision by the Green Wave in Akron on Jan. 17, 2015.
Tulane has lost four out of its last five matches and stand at 4-10 overall. Most recently, the Green Wave defeated Houston, 4-3, before falling to Kansas 4-1 this past weekend.
Southeastern Louisiana has posted six victories in its last seven matches including wins against Sam Houston State University, Lamar University, University of Central Arkansas, Southern University, University of Incarnate Word and Abilene Christian. The Lions were swept by Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Mar. 12.
Akron opens Mid-American Conference play at Eastern Michigan on Friday, March 25, at 1 p.m. at the Cluadia Wasik Tennis Complex in the league opener for both teams.
