WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Following an eventful day one of the NCAA Zone "C", senior Alice Hottensmith (Brunswick, Ohio) jumped high, jumped tight and did it right as she qualifies for the NCAA Championships in the three-meter dive with a score of 576 at Purdue University, Friday afternoon.
"Alice finished in the top 12 today and that is exactly what she needed to do," said 2016 MAC Diving Coach of the Year, Chris Medvedeff. "Placing in the top 12 in one event is very difficult at the zone level. Doing it in both events is just outstanding."
After qualifying for the one-meter dive yesterday, Hottensmith needed to finish in the top 12 to qualify for the three-meter. Following the final dive of the day, the senior found herself in the final 12th spot and on her way to the NCAA Championships.
Hottensmith's total score of 577 is a combined score from her six dives in the preliminary round (274.30) and the six dives in the final round (302.7.)
Junior Paige Kelkenberg (Lockport, N.Y.) advanced to the final round of 18 competitors with a preliminary round score of 265.30. The junior placed 13th after six dives just behind her fellow Zip with a score of 303.65 for a combined score of 568.95.
The Zips diver will now compete in both the one-meter and three-meter events at the 2016 NCAA Championships next weekend, March 17-19, in Atlanta, Ga.
