Tennis Improves to 9-1 with Victory Over St. Bonaventure

AKRON, Ohio — The University of Akron women's tennis team posted a 6-1 victory over St. Bonaventure on Tuesday afternoon at the LaTuchie Tennis Center.
Akron (9-1) took the doubles point after No. 1 doubles team of Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) and Carli Knezevich (Austin, Texas) earned a hard fought 7-6 (5) win over SBU's Mara Martinez-Santori and Gabriella Bowe.
Geier also took her singles contest as well, as the Zips won five out of six singles matches against the Bonnies. At No. 1 singles, sophomore Ariadna Blinova (Riga, Latvia) claimed her eighth straight victory of the season with a 6-2, 7-5 decision against Mara Martinez-Santori.
Senior Martina Zerbola (Neuquen, Argentina) topped St. Bonaventure's Dominique Mortier, 6-2, 6-0 in No. 4 singles while sophomore Waverly Wituski (Springboro, Ohio) took down her opponent at the No. 5 spot, 6-3, 6-2. In No. 6 singles, freshman Carla Flores (Coahuila, Mexico) defeated Francesca Chin, 6-0, 6-2.
Akron continues non-conference action when the Zips travel to Johnson City, Tenn. for two matches against East Tennessee State and No. 66 Winthrop this weekend. East Tennessee recently fell out of the ITA rankings, where they were placed 73rd overall, despite not dropping a match yet this season.
Akron's only loss this season came against West Virginia on Feb. 7, who is now ranked 75th in the latest ITA poll.
UA will take on ETSU on Friday, Mar. 4 at 11 a.m. before meeting with the Eagles on Saturday, Mar. 5 for another 11 a.m. showdown.
