AKRON, Ohio — The University of Akron women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to West Virginia on Sunday afternoon at the LaTuchie Tennis Center.
"Today was tough. We played without Sophia in the lineup due to an injury, which put us at a disadvantage right from the start," head coach Brandon Padgett said. "I am extremely impressed with how Ariadna played today, stepping up and playing No. 1 in Sophia's absence. She showed that she can play with anyone, which is what we are trying to help her believe more and more in daily. "
Akron (4-1) was swept in doubles action while claiming two victories in singles play. Sophomore Ariadna Blinova (Riga, Latvia) battled West Virginia's Hailey Barrett to a 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (4) win in No. 1 singles. At No. 6 singles, freshman Luisa Echeverry claimed a 6-2, 6-2 triumph against Yvon Martinez.
Senior Martina Zerbola (Neuquen, Argentina) also contended in a three set match but fell, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (4), to Lyn Yuen Choo at No. 5 singles.
"Luisa and Martina played well in both doubles and singles today, continuing to show just how deep our team can be," Padgett concluded. "I am looking forward to continuing to guide this team. If we all work together, we could have a special season."
The Zips travel to Wis.-Milwaukee (Feb. 12) and Illinois-Chicago (Feb. 13) before returning home on Saturday, Feb. 20 for a doubleheader with Valparaiso and Morgan State at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
