CLEVELAND, Ohio - University of Akron freshman Jonathan Lewis (Plantation, Fla.) has been selected as the 2016 Mid-American Conference Men's Soccer Freshman of the Year in a vote of the league coaches released on Thursday, Nov. 10.
Lewis' selection marked the 12th time a Zip has taken home the top newcomer award in the conference and first since Dillon Serna was honored in 2012.
"Jonathan has been a threat all year for us," Akron head coach Jared Embick commented. "He is an exciting player that has been difficult to mark. I really hope this gives him even more confidence to continue to produce like he has recently."
A second-team All-MAC performer this season, Lewis has played in all 18 matches for the Zips, including 16 starts, and has been a key offensive playmaker for Akron owning a team-high nine assists, while netting a pair of goals. He has also contributed 36 shots, including a team-best 17 on frame.
Lewis leads the nation among NCAA Division I freshmen having recorded a team-leading nine assists on the campaign.
Lewis led the MAC in assists (9) and assists per game (0.50), while ranking fifth in points (13) and shots (36), sixth in shots per game (2.00) and seventh in points per contest (0.72). In conference-only affairs, he rated first in assists (3), second in assists per tilt (0.75), fourth in shots (14) and shots per game (2.80).
Lewis and the Zips (10-5-3) open MAC Championship play hosting Western Michigan in the second semifinal on Friday, Nov. 11. Game time at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field is set for 7 p.m.
