Volleyball Wraps Up Home Slate with 3-1 Decision to Ohio

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron volleyball team fell to Mid-American Conference opponent Ohio University in four sets (18-25, 25-20, 25-17, 25-22) in its last homestand of the 2016 season on Saturday evening at James A. Rhodes Arena.
Akron (7-17, 2-10) remained close in the first set, but was unable to battle back from a 9-4 Ohio run down the stretch.
The Zips picked up their lone win of the evening in the second set by a score of 25-20. However, OU hit for .455 in the third stanza, as they managed a 25-17 win over UA to take a 2-1 advantage.
The last set of the match had a lot of back and forth between the Zips and Bobcats, as the final score of period ended at 25-22 in favor of Ohio.
Sophomore Kayla Gwozdz (Temperance, Mich.) led the way for the Akron attack with 11 kills while junior Jessica Kloehn (Milwaukee, Wis.) also added 10 kills in the effort.
Karley Kusan (Columbus, Ohio) tallied her thirteenth double-double of the season with 39 assists and 12 digs. Senior defensive specialist Brenna Mack (Mound, Minn.) contributed 12 digs as well while Kloehn added a team-high four blocks.
Ohio (13-11, 9-3) had four players hit for double figures, led by Mallory Salis and Ali Lake with 14 kills apeice.
Akron volleyball looks ahead to next week as the Zips travel to Buffalo on Thursday, Nov. 3 for a 7 p.m. match. UA honored their five seniors, Amanda Bedell, Kusan, B. Mack, Callie Mack and Julia Smagacz, for their work both on the court and in the classroom.
