AKRON, Ohio – Behind the strength of nine top finishes and three pool records, the Akron swimming and diving team finished on top of its head-to-head dual with Youngstown State, 194-106, Saturday at Beeghly Natatorium.
Along with their top finishes, the Zips clocked in 36 top three finishes. Akron also swept the top standings three times in the 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke and three-meter dive.
"We worked very hard this week and we will sleep hard tonight. Matt's team did not back down today and our girls rose to the challenge," said head coach Brian Peresie. "We are excited for school to be back in session on Tuesday and looking forward to our senior recognition next weekend."
The Zips relay teams continue to succeed in competition. The squad of junior Luka Szynal (Lublin, Poland), Paloma Marrero Munoz (Merida, Spain), senior Erin Seiler (Phoenixville, Pa) and freshman Madison Myers (Akron, Ohio) swiftly swam the 400 medley in 3:51.65 for first place and a new pool record. In the 400 freestyle relay, freshman Ragen Engel (Springfield, Ohio), senior Hannah Raspopovich (Crown Point, Ind.), freshman Sadie Fazekas (Windsor, Ontario) and sophomore Susan Franz (Canton, Ohio) touched in at a time of 3:36.37 for second place.
Junior Laura Savariau (Saint-Hilaire-la-Palud, France) and freshman Emma King went one-two in the 200 freestyle. Savariau led the pack with a 1:56.20 and King was on Savariau's tail with a 1:56.88.
Freshman Ashley Schrock (Carmel, Ind.), Seiler, and Sophomore Allison Teske (Green Bay, Wis.) swept the 100 back, earning the Zips 16 team points. Schrock finished in 1:00.24 while Seiler went 1:00.86 followed by Teske's 1:01.85.
Akron took two of the three top spots in the 100 breaststroke thanks to Myers top time of 1:07.64 and sophomore Mary Kallinicou's (Marysville, Ohio) 1:10.05 third place time.
On the boards, the Zips divers finished with the top four spots in the three-meter dive and two-out-of three in the one meter. Senior Alice Hottensmith (Brunswick, Ohio) was Akron's top diver and scored a 322.58 breaking the pool record in the three-meter and 298.95 in the one-meter for first and second place.
The one-two punch of Engel and Franz gave the Zips a first and second place finish in the 50 freestyle. Engel cruised to first place with a 24.17 time and Franz floated through the water for second place (24.47).
The Zips third pool record was in the 100 butterfly by Engel (55.94) for first place. She was followed by her teammates Myers (57.81) for second place and Szynal (1:00.24) in third place.
Akron returns home for their final home meet of the season on Saturday, January 23, for a head-to-head dual with Eastern Michigan. Before the meet, the team will recognize the seniors in a pre-meet ceremony.
