WEST POINT, N.Y. – The University of Akron women's tennis team claimed six overall matches on the second day of the West Point Invitation on Saturday, Sept. 26.
"Today we saw a much more energized group of players," said head coach Brandon Padgett. "Carla played an exceptional match, defeating the No. 5 seed and then simply ran out of gas in her next match against a top seeded player from Cornell. I am very pleased with the overall effort today, putting together a 6-2 day, which is a nice turnaround from yesterday."
In Flight 3 singles, Carla Flores beat No. 5 seed Summer Walker from UCONN, 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (3), to advance to the quarterfinal round. However, Flores dropped a 6-0, 6-1 decision to No. 1 seed Mariko Iinuma of Cornell.
In the Flight 1 singles consolation, Sophia Geier defeated Fordham's Alexis Zobeideh 8-3 to advance to the semifinals. Carli Knezevich also advanced to the semifinal match in the Flight 2 singles consolation. She outplayed St. Bonaventure's Mariam Skhirtladze 8-0 and then Fordham's Hannah Drayton 8-3.
Waverly Wituski overpowered her opponent, Lisa Ventimiglia, claiming a 8-0 victory in the Flight 4 singles consolation.
Geier and Knezevich fell in a 6-2 match against Albany's Kenic and King while in Flight 2 doubles consolation, Flores and Wituski advanced to the semifinals after winning by default over Providence.
Competition concludes on Sunday.
