Women's Tennis Travels To Army For Weekend Tournament

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron tennis team continues its fall competition schedule with a trip to New York this weekend to participate in the West Point Invitational, hosted by Army. Matches will be played Friday-Sunday and be held on both the outdoor and indoor courts at the Malek Tennis Center and Lichtenberg Tennis Center.
The Zips are one of 22 teams playing in the event, joining Army, Albany, Binghamton, Bryant, UConn, Cornell, Drexel, Fairleigh Dickinson, Fordham, Hartford, Lehigh, LIU, Marist, NJIT, Providence, Quinnipiac, Sacred Heart, St. Bonaventure, St. Peters, Seton Hall and Syracuse.
Matches will start at 9 a.m. on Friday. They'll begin with two rounds of doubles and a round of singles. Draw A doubles will be played outside while Draw B doubles will be played inside. Draw A, B, C singles will be outside and Draw D singles will be inside.
UA hosted the Akron Shootout last weekend, opening the fall schedule for this season. Newcomers Luisa Echeverry (Cali, Columbia) and Waverly Wituski (Springboro, Ohio) both went undefeated for the Zips.
Coach Brandon Padgett is in his sixth season as head coach at Akron. UA has one senior on this year's roster in Martina Zerbola (Neuquen, Argentina), who is joined by team captains Shannon Newnes (Romford, London) and Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany). Karolina Maksimova (Mogilev, Belarus) and Ariadna Blinova (Riga, Latvia) are also back as well for the Zips. Akron's newcomers comprise sophomore transfers Carli Knezevich (Austin, Texas) and Wituski in addition to freshmen Carla Flores (Saltillo, Mexico) and Echeverry.
