Inverness Intercollegiate – Day One

Zips Finish with a Solid Second Round at the Inverness Intercollegiate

TOLEDO, Ohio – The University of Akron men's golf team regrouped after a tough first-round start at the Inverness Intercollegiate, and finished Monday's second-round with a solid team effort on the par-71, 7,300-yard Inverness Club course.
The Zips opened the day with a 315 (+31) team total, and shaved 17-strokes off their second-round score for a 298 (+14) to finish 13th overall at 613 (+45). In the opening round, Akron tallied five birdies as a team, and more than doubled that amount in round two, recording 11 birdies.
Junior J.B. Williams (Danville, Ky.) and redshirt freshman Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) led the way for the Zips, each finishing 11-over with a 153 strokes. Williams showed consistency during both rounds, tallying scores of 77 (+6) and 76 (+5) with four birdies, while Grayson posted a career-best even-par 71 second-round total after an 82 (+11) opening round and two birdies. Sophomore George Baylis (Ascot, Englandwill) followed with a team-high six birdies and rounds of 79 and 75 for a 154 (+12), while rounding out the Zips' five-man scoring efforts were juniors Yann Pfeiffer (Saint-Nom-la-Breteche, France), 79, 77 - 156 (+14) and Zach Gollwitzer (Ballwin, Mo.), 80, 76 - 156 (+14).
Despite recording the lowest team-round score of the day, 286 (+2), Purdue finished third with a 36-hole total of 588 (+20). California claimed the top spot with rounds of 291 and 293 for a 584 (+16), and established a two-stroke advantage over the East Tennessee State at 586 (+18). In addition, California's KK Limbhasut carded a pair of 1-under par, 70-stroke performances en route to a tournament-low 140 (-2) total.
