POWELLS POINT, N.C. – Senior Ryan Harris (Carlisle, Mass.) and sophomore George Baylis (Ascot, England) led the University of Akron men's golf team with a pair of 3-under par 68 performances at the Outer Banks Intercollegiate hosted by Old Dominion University. After the opening round, Akron is currently tied for second with the host at 6-under par 278 while No. 83 Campbell leads the 18-team field with a 267 (-17) team total.
At the par 71, 6,550-yard Kilmarlic Golf Club, Harris recorded a field-high 15 pars with three birdies while Baylis carded 13 pars, four birdies and a bogey. Both, Harris and Baylis are tied for seventh overall, trailing the leader by five strokes. Junior Yann Pfeiffer (Saint-Nom-la-Breteche, France) followed with 15th best 70 (-1), highlighted with four birdies, and junior J.B. Williams (Danville, Ky.) added a 1-over 72 effort and tied for 30th. Rounding out the team scoring was redshirt freshman Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) with a 73 (+2) performance.
"We played well today," head coach David Trainor said. "I am very happy with our effort, the guys played smart and confident. Would have loved to see a few more putts fall."
Monday's round is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. ET with split tee times from the No. 1 and No. 10 tees each day. Akron will open the second round on the No. 1 tee at 10 a.m. with Grayson teeing off first followed by Williams (10:09), Pfeiffer (10:18), Baylis (10:27), and Harris (10:36).
