Zips Eighth After Two Rounds at The Invitational

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – The University of Akron men's golf team opened the season at The Invitational on the par-72, 7,115-yard Ocean Course in Kiawah Island, S.C. The Zips were two strokes off the lead with a first round score of 293 (+5). However, the second round didn't produce the same result, and Zips fell to eighth overall 293, 301 -594 (+18).
Sophomore George Baylis (Ascot, England) and junior Yann Pfeiffer (Saint-Nom-la-Breteche, France) each turned-in opening round 1-under par 71 stroke performances. Windy conditions and untimely miscues challenged the Zips second round scoring. Baylis ended with a 79 and Pfeiffer tallied an 82, completing the day at 150 (+6) and 153 (+9), respectively. Currently, Baylis is ranked 25th.
Joining Baylis in the Top 25 were junior J.B. Williams (Danville, Ky.) and freshman Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.). Williams and Grayson had identical rounds, finishing the day with scores of 77, 73 -150 (+6). Senior Louis Birchall (Ingestre Park, England) added a 74, 82 -156 (+12) while senior Ryan Harris (Carlisle, Mass.) tallied a 83, 76 -159 (+15).
"We played very well in the opening round, but big numbers hurt our afternoon play," head coach David Trainor said. " Yann and George had great opening rounds while JB and Elliott battled the conditions and scored well the second round."
The hosts and No. 87 ranked College of Charleston leads the field with a 578 (+2) total followed by Cincinnatti and No. 48 Georgia Southern with scores of 582 (+6) and 583 (+7), respectively.
Cincinnati's Jared O'Kelley posted a field-best 7-under par with rounds of 70, 67 -137 (-7).
Saturday's final round is scheduled to begin 8 a.m. ET. Fans can follow the two-day event live via Golfstat Live Scoring.
