EDMONTON, Alberta - University of Akron junior pole vaulter Shawn Barber (Kingwood, Texas) cleared 18-4.50 (5.60m) at the Canadian Track and Field Championships on Sunday, July 5, to garner his third consecutive national title.
In his first competition since capturing his third NCAA title on June 10 at the NCAA Championship in Eugene, Ore., Barber surpassed 18-4.50 on his second run at the height to set a new championship meet record. He easily outdistanced Deryk Theodore, who placed second, with a clearance of 16-6.75 (5.05m).
With his efforts, Barber has qualified for the IAAF World Championships to be held Aug. 22-30 in Beijing, China. He is also scheduled to compete for Canada at the Pan-American Games, July 10-26, in Toronto, Ontario.
