EUGENE, Ore. - University of Akron junior pole vaulter Shawn Barber (Kingwood, Texas) added another honor to his impressive 2015 resume on Monday, June 8, as he was tabbed as the Great Lakes Regional Field Athlete of the Year by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
"We have a super region with outstanding competition," Akron head coach Dennis Mitchell commented. "This is a great honor. We are looking forward to the national championships for a chance at great competition and also hopefully a chance at trying some higher bars."
With his selection as the Great Lakes Regional Field Athlete of the Year, Barber is in contention to become Akron's first-ever National Athlete of the Year. The award winners will be announced later this month following the conclusion of the NCAA Championship, which will run this Wednesday, June 10, through Saturday, June 13, at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
A two-time NCAA Indoor Champion, Barber will go in search of his first-ever outdoor championship when he competes at the NCAA Championship on Wednesday, June 10.
