Zips close out successful Northeast Ohio Quad

AKRON, Ohio - A school- and facility record fell as the Akron track and field team closed out the Northeast Ohio Quad on Friday, April 3, registering four individual triumphs at both the Lee R. Jackson Track and Field Complex and the Stile Athletics Field House.
Establishing a school- and Stile Athletics Field House record in the women's high jump with a leap of 6-1.50 (1.87m) was senior Claudia Garcia Jou (Barcelona, Spain). Surpassing 5-6 (1.68m) to finish second was senior Skyler Willis (Cincinnati, Ohio).
Senior Alexis Cooks (Colorado Springs, Colo.) was the Zips' top finisher in the women's hammer placing second en route to registering the third-best throw in school history at 201-9. Winning the event was former Akron All-American Brittany Funk (Jeromesville, Ohio) with a mark of 209-11.
Senior Jess Delic (Cresson, Pa.) captured the women's javelin with a throw of 152-11 (46.62m).
The Zips finished second and third, respectively, in the women's pole vault as redshirt sophomore Caroline Hasse (Potsdam, Germany) and senior Claire Lucas (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) each eclipsed 13-0.75 (3.98m). Hasse cleared the height on her second attempt, while Lucas surpassed the mark on her third try.
Freshman Mitch Cavalier (Louisville, Ohio) placed second in the men's high jump with a career-best height of 6-10 (2.08m).
Winning the men's javelin with a throw of 196-8 (59.96m) was senior Bryce Lemon (New Brighton, Pa.).
In the men's pole vault, junior Shawn Barber (Kingwood, Texas) won the event with a mark of 18-3.25 (5.57m). Sophomore Matt Rowland (Bellevue, Ohio) placed third with a clearance of 16-8.75 (5.10m).
Rounding out competition for the meet was the men's hammer, where redshirt junior Zack Shull (Columbus, Ohio) finished fourth for Akron with a throw of 194-4 (59.24m).
The Zips are scheduled to return to competition traveling to Walnut, Calif., to compete in the Mt. Sac Relays (April 17-18).
