KALAMAZOO, Mich.— The University of Akron women's tennis team fell to Western Michigan, 7-0, in Mid-American Conference action on Friday at the West Hills Athletic Club.
The Zips fell to 9-10 overall and 1-4 MAC play, while the Broncos improved to 12-8 overall and 4-1 in the league.
"This team continues to see difficult injuries sideline it's chances at serious success," head coach Brandon Padgett said. "We saw amazing effort on a couple of courts, but we also saw a lack of effort on other courts, which we cannot accept. We know the reality of where we are in the conference season, and we will see what kind of response this group will have moving forward."
Western Michigan won the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and 2 spots. The No. 3 teams did not finish play.
In singles action, senior Olga Shkundina (Ufa, Russia) won her first set at No 3 singles, 6-3, before dropping the final two sets, 6-1, 6-3, to Barbare Eristavi. At No. 4 singles, freshman Ariadna Blinova (Riga, Latvia) fell in a third set tie-breaker to Tracy Kuhle, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 1-0 (1), in the final match on the day.
Akron visits Ball State (10-4 overall, 0-2 MAC) on Sunday, April 5, for a 1 p.m. match at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center.
