Women's Tennis Drops 4-3 Decision at Ball State
April 05 | Women's Tennis
MUNCIE, Ind.— The University of Akron women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 match at Ball State in Mid-American Conference action on Sunday afternoon at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center.
The Zips fell to 9-11 overall and 1-5 MAC play, while the Cardinals improved to 11-4 overall and 1-2 in the league.
"Another difficult loss today," head coach Brandon Padgett said. "Losing three conference matches by 4-3 scores is tough to get past mentally, but the physical issues are what we are having to deal with most. Losing Madison (Cohen) on Friday to a shoulder injury, and today, Sophia (Geier) passing out on court and being unable to continue was a difficult blow to overcome. We have to have others step up if we want to become a better overall team."
Ball State won the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and 2 spots. The No. 3 teams did not finish play although senior Olga Shkundina (Ufa, Russia) and freshman Ariadna Blinova (Riga, Latvia) were leading 6-5.
In singles action, Shkundina won at No 3 singles, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4, over Toni Ormond. At No. 4 singles, Blinova defeated Ashlyn Rang, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Sophomore Shannon Newnes (Romford, London) beat Olivia Large, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 6 spot.
Akron continues MAC road play at Buffalo on Saturday, April 11, in a 1 p.m. match.
