Women's Tennis Travels to WMU, BSU in MAC Action

AKRON, Ohio— The University of Akron women's tennis team hits the road for two Mid-American Conference matches this weekend.
The Zips (9-9 overall, 0-3 MAC) travel to Western Michigan (11-8 overall, 3-1 MAC) on Friday, April 3 for a 1 p.m. match at West Hills Courts. Live stats will be available on www.GoZips.com.
Akron then visits Ball State (10-4 overall, 0-2 MAC) on Sunday, April 5, for a 1 p.m. match at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center. BSU faces Buffalo on Friday before hosting Akron.
Last weekend, the Zips earned their first MAC win with a 6-1 defeat of Bowling Green. In doubles action, Akron collected wins in the No. 1 and No. 3 spots. The team of junior Martina Zerbola (Neuquen, Argentina) and freshman Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) defeated Megan Miller and Harley Hutchison, 6-4, in the No. 1 spot. Senior Olga Shkundina (Ufa, Russia) and freshman Ariadna Blinova (Riga, Latvia) picked up the second doubles victory, coming in the No. 3 spot at 6-0 against Antonina Farrar and Sydney Seeley.
Shkundina posted a win at the No. 2 spot after taking both sets by a score of 6-4 against Hutchison. Blinova followed in the No. 3 spot with a winning score of 6-2 in each set against Bowling Green's Emily Witt. A win in the No. 4 spot came from Geier, who topped Brittany Plaszewski, 7-5, 6-3. Sophomore Shannon Newnes (Romford, London) defeated Farrar (6-1, 6-0) while junior Madison Cohen (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) claimed a 6-0, 6-0 win over Seeley to round out the singles victories.
