AKRON, Ohio – Akron's one-run lead entering the top of the ninth inning was not enough to hold off Miami (Ohio) as the University of Akron's baseball team suffered a 11-9 loss to the RedHawks on Saturday after Miami managed a three-run ninth inning to win game two of the series at Lee R. Jackson Field.
Akron slipped to 18-18 on the season and 9-5 in Mid-American conference play while Miami improved to 7-28 overall and 5-9 in the MAC. The three-game series is now even at one game apiece.
UA held a 9-8 advantage heading into the top of the ninth before Miami's Jacob Wolf clubbed a two-run single, followed by an RBI triple from Adam Yacek to plate three in the frame.
The Zips stranded the tying run on first base in the bottom of the ninth after sophomore infielder Dom Iero reached on an error and redshirt junior infielder Gerrad Rohan drew a walk.
Overall, Miami out-hit the Zips, 15-14, in a game that saw four home runs. Akron's sophomore catcher Brian Lees launched his first collegiate homer to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning to break a 6-all tie. Redshirt senior outfielder Joey Havrilak belted a solo homer in the next inning, his fifth of the season and second homer in two games.
Five Zips issued a multi-hit performance led by Rohan, who went 3-for-4 at the plate with a walk.
Mosbarger, a junior designated hitter, raked in a game-high three RBI. He sent two across the plate on a stand-up triple in the second inning.
Miami got off to a scoring start, plating four runs off five hits in the top of the first. The Zips responded with a pair of runs on back-to-back RBI hits from Lees and Iero as part of a four-hit inning to trail 4-2.
Miami tacked on a run in the second before Mosbarger clubbed his two-run triple, followed by a Havrilak sacrifice fly to knot the game at 5-5.
Akron loaded the bases in the bottom of the third and pushed Iero across for the first lead of the game at 6-5.
The Zips' lead extended to an 8-6 advantage through six innings after the pair of homers, however, Miami quickly tied the game at 8-all in the top of the seventh on a pair of RBI hits.
Mosbarger broke the tie with an RBI single for UA's one-run lead entering the final frame.
The loss went to senior left-hander Pat Dyer (3-1), who made just his second appearance since suffering a concussion earlier in the season. The southpaw allowed five hits and four runs after tossing 3.2 innings of relief.
The Zips' pitching staff walked a season-high nine batters in the loss and struck out 11.
Akron and Miami will close out the three-game MAC series on Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Lee Jackson Field.
