AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron baseball team put a pair of runners on base in the bottom of the 13th inning but could not counter a Miami (Ohio) solo home run belted in the top of the frame as it fell, 8-7, in the series finale against the RedHakws at Lee R. Jackson Field on Sunday.
The Zips move to 18-19 overall and 9-5 in the Mid-American Conference as they dropped the series to Miami, 2-1. The RedHawks improved to 8-28 overall and 6-9 in the MAC.
Akron and Miami dove into extra innings with the game locked in a 6-all tie. Following a quiet 10th inning from both teams, Miami scored one run on a groundout in the 11th.
In UA's half of the frame, junior designated hitter and pitcher Daulton Mosbarger slapped a two-out double down the right field line and was sent home on an RBI single from sophomore catcher Brian Lees to knot the game at 7-all heading into the 12th.
Two Zips reached base in each of the final two innings, but none crossed. Akron left 14 on base in the affair, including six runners left on in the four extra innings as UA could not convert in response to the RedHawks' 13th-inning bomb from Jake Romano.
Akron out-hit Miami, 14-9, led by redshirt freshman outfielder Mason Mamarella who went 3-for-7 with three runs scored and an RBI.
Mosbarger collected a game-high two RBI and launched a pair of doubles along with a sacrifice fly while redshirt senior outfielder Joey Havrilak drew a game-high three walks and recorded a hit and an RBI.
Starter Jon Pusateri, a redshirt senior, pitched 6.0 innings, fanned four and walked one without allowing an earned run. Three runs crossed against the righty as Akron suffered from five total miscues on the afternoon.
The loss was tagged on sophomore reliever Josh Davis (3-3) who tossed the final 4.1 innings and allowed two hits and two runs while fanning four and walking one.
UA struggled against Miami reliever Will Schierholz (1-1) who picked up the win after providing 6.1 innings of relief for the RedHawks and allowing five hits and one run.
Each team plated one run apiece in the first inning for an early 1-all tie. Miami (Ohio) led 3-1 through three innings after two runs crossed on a pair of Akron miscues.
The Zips knocked three-straight singles to lead off the bottom of the fifth as two runs crossed on back-to-back bases-loaded walks. Akron's go-ahead run scored on a double play in the innings for a 4-3 lead.
An RBI double from Mamarella and Mosbarger's sacrifice fly combined to extend Akron's lead to 6-3 in the sixth inning.
Miami then managed three runs off three hits in the eighth to force the game into extras.
The Zips return to action with a pair of midweek games beginning with a non-conference bout against Western Michigan at All Pro Freight Stadium in Avon, Ohio on Tuesday, April 21. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. UA will then turn around to take on Canisius at home on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
