AKRON, Ohio— The University of Akron women's tennis team fell 7-0 to Miami (Ohio) in Mid-American Conference action on Sunday afternoon at the LaTuchie Tennis Center.
The Zips fell to 9-9 overall and -13 in MAC play, while the RedHawks improved to 8-6 overall and 3-0 in the MAC.
"Miami is definitely the best in our conference," head coach Brandon Padgett said. "We did as well as we could under the circumstances with a very depleted line-up. We're happy with the way Martina and Sophia played, but we need to do a better job of closing out when given the opportunity."
In doubles action, MIami captured wins at No. 2and No. 3 to claim the team point. The pairs at the No. 1 spot did not finish play.
In singles action, junior Martina Zerbola (Neuquen, Argentina) fell in a third set tie-breaker at No. 1 to Alix Thurman, 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (10-1). Freshman Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) also fell to Nelli Ponomareva in a tie-breaker at the No. 4. spot, 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10-4).
Akron travels to Western Michigan on Friday, April 3, for a 1 p.m. MAC contest.
