Women's Tennis Falls at Toledo, 4-3

TOLEDO, Ohio— The University of Akron women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision at Toledo in Mid-American Conference action on Sunday afternoon at the Shadow Valley Tennis Club.
The Zips fell to 7-8 overall and 0-2 in MAC play, while the Rockets improved to 11-5 overall and 2-0 in the MAC.
"Another tough loss today, but once again, I am extremely proud of the effort shown," head coach Brandon Padgett said. "We still need better balance throughout the line-up, but we will continue to work, and our fortune will change."
In doubles action, Toledo captured wins at No. 1 and No. 3 to claim the team point. The pairs at the No. 2 spot did not finish play.
In singles action, Akron won at the No. 4, 5, and 6 spots. Senior Olga Shkundina (Ufa, Russia) defeated Lauren Thai, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, while freshman Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) beat Emily Mazzola, 6-0 6-2. Sophomore Shannon Newnes (Romford, London) won a tough battle with Katelyn Nguyen, 7-5, 7-6 (5).
Akron travels to UW-Milwaukee on Tuesday, March 24, for a 1 p.m. match before returning home to the LaTuchie Tennis Center to host Bowling Green on Friday, March 27, at 1 p.m.
