Women's Tennis Wins at UW-Milwaukee, 4-3

MILWAUKEE, Wis.— The University of Akron women's tennis team claimed a 4-3 win at UW-Milwaukee on Tuesday afternoon at the North Shore Elite Tennis Club.
The Zips improved to 8-8 overall, while the Panthers fell to 4-12 overall.
"Today was the epitome of an ugly win, but we will take it," head coach Brandon Padgett said. " We needed this after two tough 4-3 losses. What we are learning as a team is that talent doesn't win matches; effort, focus, and commitment to doing what needs to be done, on and off the court, wins matches."
In doubles action, Milwaukee captured wins at No. 1 and No. 3 to claim the team point. Junior Madison Cohen (Huntington Valley, Pa.) and sophomore Karolina Maksimova (Mogliev, Belarus) defeated Chelsea Bailey and Hayley Marshall, 6-3, at No. 2 doubles.
In singles action, Akron picked up four wins. At No. 3 singles, freshman Ariadna Blinova (Riga, Latvia) beat Alysa Straub, 6-3, 6-4. At the No. 4 spot, freshman Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) defeated Aerielle Pendleton, 6-3, 6-0. At No. 5 singles,
Cohen came back to take down Christina Colarossi, 1-6, 6-2, 7-5. Sophomore Shannon Newnes (Romford, London) captured a 6-4, 7-5 win over Mardee Merar at No. 6 singles.
"I'm very proud of Madison," Padgett said. "She really fought hard against a player that has been very successful this season. Soph dog and Ari continue to play strong for us, which is great to see out of our freshmen."
Akron returns home to the LaTuchie Tennis Center to host Bowling Green on Friday, March 27, at 1 p.m.
