AKRON, Ohio – Midway through the final round, the University of Akron men's golf team evened the scorecards with the University of Maryland, however the Terps were able to hold off the Zips for the 2015 Firestone Invitational championship. Maryland carded a team score of 284, 285, 287 – 856 (-8) while the host Zips earned runner-up with 290, 283, 285 – 858 (-6) tournament totals at the Firestone Country Club North Course.
Maryland's David Kocher captured medalist honors with a 54-hole 9-under par 207, while Toledo's Otto Black and Valparaiso's Peter Webb earned runner-up honors with 8-under par 208 scores.
The Firestone Invitational came down to the last hole, as the Zips trailed by two strokes after senior Louis Birchall (Ingestre Park, England), senior Ryan Harris (Carlisle, Mass.), and junior J.B. Williams (Danville, Ky.) submitted their scorecards each with 1-under par 71 performances. Maryland's Kocher and Akron's sophomore George Baylis (Ascot, England) were the final two left on the course. On hole No. 17, Kocher recorded a bogey while Baylis earned par. With the Zips behind one stroke, Baylis found the 18th fairway water hazard and finished with bogey as Kocher earned par. As a result, Kocher and Baylis both completed the final round with 1-under par 71 efforts. In addition, Akron registered the second-best team score of the day at 285 (-3).
Baylis led the Zips' tournament scoring and finished fifth overall with 70, 70, 71, – 211 (-5), collecting 36 pars, 10 birdies, and an eagle with only four bogies and one double-bogey. Harris finished tied for 19th with an even-par tournament 216, highlighted by 30 pars, 10 birdies and two eagles, while redshirt freshman Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) finished 1-over par and 25th overall. Birchall and Williams added 2-over par tournament totals to be tied for 31st place.
The Zips' individual competitors scores were junior Zach Gollwitzer (Ballwin, Mo.) 73, 75, 74 – 222 (+6), junior Yann Pfeiffer (Saint-Nom-la-Breteche, France) 77, 75, 77 – 229 (+13), junior Chandler Morgan (Lexington, Ky.) 79, 81, 78 - 238 (+22), and freshman Euan Gill (Dingwall, Scotland) 78, 83, 79 – 240 (+24).
Akron will be back in action on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 19-20 in Bridgeport, W.Va. at the Pete Dye Golf Course for the Mountaineer Intercollegiate.
